Who is the proposed program for?
The program is being developed for home cooks, former or current chefs and aspiring small food business owners, including people facing barriers to employment and entrepreneurs from culturally diverse backgrounds. An enquiry starts a conversation about suitability and available support; it does not guarantee a place.
What would participants work on?
- Explore and plan: develop a business idea, business plan and financial forecasts with guidance.
- Prepare to operate: understand council applications, food safety requirements and suitable training.
- Prepare to launch: plan pricing, cash flow, records and manageable day-to-day operations.
- Develop the business: review progress and work through business decisions with ongoing mentoring.
Micro Kitchen guides participants to do their own work. Participants remain responsible for business decisions and applications. Councils and relevant authorities determine approvals and requirements.
What is confirmed about availability and funding?
Micro Kitchen is seeking funding to deliver the full program. The proposed scope, participant capacity and mentoring arrangements depend on funding and confirmed delivery arrangements. No guaranteed income, job, council approval or trading start date is offered.
Discounted food safety training rates are being discussed. No training provider, discount or price is currently confirmed on the website. Required training depends on the participant’s activities and applicable requirements.
Micro Kitchen does not currently have deductible gift recipient (DGR) endorsement. Gifts made directly to Micro Kitchen are not currently tax-deductible. Funding and support enquiries are welcome through the Fund our program page.
How do referrals and employment services fit?
Micro Kitchen welcomes referral discussions with councils, community organisations and employment services providers. It is not a contracted Self-Employment Assistance provider. Any recognition in a participant’s Job Plan, points-based system or obligations needs assessment by the relevant provider or authority before the participant relies on it. See referral information.
What is planned for Phase Two?
A longer-term concept is an online marketplace helping program participants promote and sell their products to local communities. This marketplace is not operating and has no confirmed launch date or public brand name.
